Students for a New American Politics PAC, SNAP PAC, is proud to endorse Val Demings for Florida’s 10th Congressional seat. SNAP has placed two trained fellows, selected from a competitive nationwide pool of applicants, to work as field organizers on Demings’ campaign this summer.
Chief Demings has spent her life devoted to making a difference for others. Chief Demings rose from humble beginnings to live the American Dream. She started her career in public service as a social worker, then later joined the Orlando Police Department. After more than two decades of service, Demings was appointed the first woman to serve as Orlando Chief of Police. In this position, she led successful efforts to address violent crime in the city. During her tenure as chief, violent crime decreased by more than 40 percent, the most significant decrease in the city’s history.
“I’m honored that SNAP believed in my candidacy enough to add two fellows to our team this summer,” said Chief Val Demings. “This group of students and recent graduates are passionate and motivated to bring change to Congress. We know they will be a big asset to our campaign and field efforts, helping to ensure a victory on August 30th.”
Chief Demings will bring an extraordinary amount of experience to Congress. She is an advocate for higher education and believes that everyone deserves equal access to quality education. In Congress, she will work to ensure that all young people who graduate from high school are college-bound or workforce-ready. During her time as chief, she understood the role that education has in reducing crime. She launched innovative educational programs like Operation Positive Direction, a mentoring program that empowers at-risk students through tutoring, community service, and positive incentives.
“Chief Demings is no stranger to tough battles, and in Congress she will work tirelessly to increase economic opportunity and improve the criminal justice system,” said SNAP PAC executive director Mila Rostain. “We are thrilled to be working with the campaign and are confident that our fellows will have a meaningful organizing experience.”
SNAP PAC is the largest student-run PAC in the nation, and they back progressive candidates who are dedicated to promoting effective change in Congress. This year’s SNAP PAC fellows were trained at Yale University before arriving at their site placements. SNAP supports candidates who have progressive stances on important issues such as economics and labor issues.
